The Vietnam War was one of the most notable conflicts of the 20th century, with US forces fighting for over a decade in Southeast Asia with heavy losses. The Vietnam War sparked many things not seen before, such as widespread protests; no American war at the time had experienced so much opposition before. This also spread to the music of the era; before Vietnam, wartime music consisted of marching tunes to boost the morale of soldiers and propaganda music to gain support for the war. However, Vietnam was a time where many songs were written and released protesting the war, complaining about wealth inequality in the draft (Fortunate Son, War Pigs), public disillusionment (Blowin in the Wind, War, Give Peace a Chance), the futility of the war (All Along the Watchtower), the treatment of protestors (Ohio), and the experiences of veterans (Paint It Black, Born in the USA). The music of the era wasn't just limited to the west; in Vietnam, artists would create songs as propaganda (Giai Phong Mien Nam). Overall, Vietnam forever changed the landscape of wartime music.
