The American Revolution was an integral time for wartime music. It was one of the first wars where songs became widespread among both sides, as songs were used to boost morale, stir up support for the war effort, and make fun of people on the other side of the conflict. Songs were used at the start of the war for propaganda by both sides: the British used songs like “Yankee Doodle” to mock the colonists, while the colonists used songs like “The Liberty Song” to build camaraderie among the colonies and unite them in their common goal for independence. Music continued to be a tool for both sides after the war and at the end of the war, the song “The World Turned Upside Down” was apocryphally played at Yorktown during the British surrender. Overall, the American Revolution was one of the earliest wars that was defined by music.
